Meet Matiye…. He is 11 years old:

“My dad was a businessman, and we lived very well. He always took care of us, my mother never had to work. During the crisis, my dad was working in Rwanda. The police came to his hotel, took him outside, and shot him in the head. That was 3 years ago. I miss him so much it hurts my heart to think about. I do not want to talk about that anymore. He would be so upset to learn that we were begging in the streets. He loved us so much. He was building us a house, but the government took it from us before it was finished because my mother could not pay.

I skip school two days a week to beg for food. On the weekends, I beg too. We have to eat first my mother tells me. She has not been the same since my dad died. If I could ask for anything right now, I would ask for some shoes, and some new pants. But we can never afford clothes, because we are always short on food.”
