Massage Therapy and Scoliosis -I have scoliosis & based on my own experiences with massage therapists, so many are afraid to work on the muscles of a person with severe scoliosis. I’m sure there are thoughts of “OMG how do I treat this?” or “Will I hurt this person”. As a result, I have become a therapist who is excellent at understanding massage for scoliosis. Although scoliosis can be a complex condition & scary to treat, massage therapy done in the correct manner can really help us. As a person with scoliosis, I hear therapists talking about how relaxation is good combined with cranial sacral therapies and my thoughts are…. REALLY? They are completely wrong in a lot of cases.
Scoliosis clients need a therapist who REALLY knows anatomy, who understands Scoliosis & who isn’t afraid to REALLY treat us remembering that the needs of each scoliosis client will be different so communication is critical. This means communication with the client and if needed with health care providers.
For me, it is deep tissue (and I’m not talking the deep tissue massages that so many massage therapists give which for me they may as well be “petting a cat”) with dynamic cupping, stretching & IASTM.
