Sports Massage and the Sponsored Athlete

Sports massage is not just your “regular” massage. Massage therapy as part of an athletes training program is meant to help enhance the athletes performance and to aide in recovery following activity or following injury.

Type of sports massage and the timing of that massage is critical.  Sports massage is typically delivered as:

  • Pre-event massage is delivered at the performance site, usually with the athlete fully clothed. Fast-paced and stimulating, it helps to establish blood flow and to warm up muscles. During the massage, the athlete generally focuses on visualizing the upcoming event.
  • Post-event massage is also delivered on site, through the clothes – The intent here is to calm the nervous system and begin the process of flushing toxins and waste products out of the body. Post-event massage can reduce recovery time, enabling an athlete to resume training much sooner than rest alone would allow. When an athlete sustains an injury, skillful massage therapy can often speed and improve the quality of healing.

Competitive athletes have gruelling training regimes and extreme dedication and this is why a good athlete/sport therapist is key to helping the athlete in maintaining the health of their bodies.
  • regular season maintenance sports massage. This massage is extra importance and should be provided to the athlete regularly during their training season as it allows the athlete to recover faster following a hard workout, it keeps them flexible and we believe it allows them to train more frequently thus increasing performance ability.  Some believe that high performance athletes should have massage incorporated into their daily program. We believe that the frequency of maintenance massage depends on the condition of the athlete and what their training requirements and should be coordinated with all stakeholders to ensure that the athlete is being provided with exactly what they need to perform well.

We believe that its not just about having the best coaching!! Its not simply about having an athlete that trains and performs at a high level!! Its about working with the Whole Athlete to help in the process of “turning out” and athlete that is not only well trained, who trains hard, but whose body and mind has been given the ability to complete rest and be restored for training through the use of a TEAM of Therapists and Medical personnel.
